11/28: It MAY rain tomorrow. If it is not raining, these events will go on as planned, described below. If it is raining, the festivities will be moving indoors to the Shuffleboard Room at Johnson Lanes. Either way, we hope to see you there!
Sun City West residents are invited to the grand opening of the community’s newly renovated tennis complex on Nov. 29.
The $1.5 million upgrade to the “Memo’s Bistro Tennis Complex” at R.H. Johnson Recreation Center added new concrete surfacing to 15 tennis courts, as well as freshly painted platform tennis courts, newly designed walking paths, shade structure and social areas. The restrooms also were expanded, the monitor station was updated and lighting on 7 courts was upgraded to LED fixtures during the seven-month process.
The grand opening will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, beginning with a ribbon cutting. Food will be available courtesy of Memo’s Bistro at 4:30 p.m. at the shade structure. Food will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, while it lasts. There will be door prizes and giveaways, while they last. Musical entertainment from The Priscilla Rose Band will add to the festive atmosphere.
Members can check their stroke and volley speed with a radar gun set up on court No. 15, while drills and matches will take place on court No. 1. A demonstration of platform tennis will take place on court C.
Memo’s Bistro is the official sponsor of these new courts. The Rec Centers also would like to thank the Tennis Club for their involvement in this event, as well as main event sponsors: K.L. McIntyre General Contractor L.L.C, PGA TOUR Superstore, Toyota of Surprise, Coulter Nissan, Lunde Peoria VW, Edward Jones, Columbia Golf Cars, Fry’s Foods and Sun City Mechanical.
The courts will officially reopen for regular play on Friday, Nov. 30. Rec Centers’ members can reach the Tennis Tower at 623-544-6151 with questions or to reserve court time.
