Grand Opening slated Sept. 16

The new R.H. Johnson Pool will reopen on Aug. 28, and a grand opening celebration will be held a few weeks later.

The opening has been eagerly awaited since the pool, which is more than 35 years old and was increasingly in need of repairs, closed on Jan. 3 to accommodate the large-scale project, which not only included the aquatics facility, but also the entrance lobby and a new centralized check-in desk. Swimmers and water walkers will now enjoy eight 25-meter swimming lanes; shaded umbrellas over parts of the pool; a zero-entry section; small splash pad; an enlarged spa; and a large middle section for swimming that can also be used for water volleyball. The water walking area has been expanded and includes two water features.

The $4.1 million project also includes a new great lawn near the bocce courts (close to the pool but separated by a fence) with stepped up access to the upper section of R.H. Johnson where the Member Services Office and various chartered clubs reside. This will provide new access from top to bottom. The great lawn, with an attached, elevated performance stage, will provide a new venue for residents. A picnic area also is included in this space.

The remodeled pool opens at 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, for swimming, water walking and other regular activities. Regular pool hours and fitness center hours will be 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The new Buzz Coffee/Snack bar will be open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Parts of the pool will be closed during some scheduled activities: 6-7:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, lap and water walking; 7:45-8:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Deep Water Exercise; and 9-10 a.m. Monday-Friday, Water Exercise.

Children’s Swim Hours will return to R.H. Johnson from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. seven days a week.

Water volleyball will be available from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

For those who aren’t back to town yet, no worries. The official grand opening will begin with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. Several activities are being planned between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Some of the offerings include water class demonstrations, volleyball, a photo booth, food for purchase and a concert featuring the Southwest Surfers (a Beach Boys tribute). Check out in the coming weeks, and September’s Rec Center News for more details.
