The son of a career Air Force sergeant, Bernard “Bernie” Reed enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970, serving 10 ½ years as an aviation supply man, air traffic controller and working at the American embassies in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Bogota, Columbia. He also served with the U.S. delegation to the United Nations 1st Law of the Sea Conference in Caracas, Venezuela.

In 1981, he was hired as an air traffic controller in the Federal Aviation Administration, serving in Southern California, the San Francisco Bay Area, and New York City. During his career, he helped form the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) and served as a union local president at Bay Approach, Alternate Regional Vice President for the Western-Pacific Region, and the Chairman of the 1993 and 1998 National Collective Bargaining Agreement teams.

After retiring from New York Approach Control in 2008, he moved to Melbourne, Fla., in spring 2009. After serving three terms as the Tennis Club president, he was elected to the Heritage Isle at Viera Community Development District Board of Supervisors and served as its chairman. The district provided for planning, financing, constructing, operating and maintaining various public improvements and community facilities within its jurisdiction encompassing more than 370 acres.

In 2017, Reed and his wife, Janice, moved to Goodyear, and after having time to search for the perfect community, purchased a home in Sun City West this past May. In an effort to learn more about our community, Reed attended the fall 2018 class of the Sun City West TORCH Citizens Academy. Attendance in that class inspired him to want to serve and give back to our great community.
