The Recreation Centers of Sun City West invites area residents to a discussion with author and historian Jeffrey Geiger about his book “German Prisoners of War at Camp Cooke, Calif.”
This event will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the Social Hall at R.H. Johnson Rec Center, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd., in Sun City West.
The book comes on the 75th anniversary of the Allied victory in North Africa in May 1943, when the first massive wave of German prisoners arrived in America. His talk will highlight Arizona’s experience. Papago Park and Florence were two main camps, but there were several others throughout the state.
Geiger is the retired chief civilian historian from Vandenberg Air Force Base, formerly Camp Cooke. He is the author of “Camp Cooke and Vandenberg Air Force Base, 1941-1966” and has published articles on historical topics in several magazines and newspapers.
This book talk is free and open to all. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and copies of his book will be available for purchase at the program.
